Hurt or Harm?

Hi Everyone:

Have you ever done something, knowing ahead of time that it was going to be painful?  Sometimes we choose not to do the activity because we don't want to feel the pain.  Did you know that pain, as long as it doesn't harm you, is many times a good thing, keeping you from worse pain down the road?

For example:  Have you ever gone to the dentist when you had a cavity?  Even with novocaine, it's very unpleasant when the dentist removes the cavity and fills it; or even worse, if the tooth is so bad that it needs to be pulled.  Did your dentist want to hurt you?  No.  He sees beyond the hurt and actually wants to save the tooth.  But whether he saves it or not, he wants to save you from future pain.  In the end, the pain goes away and you are healthier...and you feel better than you ever would have had he not taken care of your bad tooth.

Next question?  When you ate the sugar that gave you the cavity, did that hurt?  No, it  tasted good!  Did it harm you?  Yes.

Therein lies my point.

"Things can hurt and not harm us.  In fact , they can even be good for us; and things that feel good, can be very harmful to us."   (Boundaries, Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend)

"No pain, no gain!"  Familiar with this saying?

As long as the pain isn't harming you, pain can actually be a good thing.

This week I want you to work hard and the result may be a few sore muscles.  Wouldn't that be great!?!
